Alyssa Ingrassia is a Senior Landscape Designer at RVi with experience in master planned communities, municipal design, and urban infill projects. In this spotlight, she shares memorable career moments, her professional goals, and what solidified her passion for Landscape Architecture.
What initially inspired you to pursue a career in Landscape Architecture?
Throughout high school, I was torn between my love for science, the environment, and fine art, dividing my time between a fine art academy and a STEM engineering academy.
During my sophomore year, my mom called me to watch a talk on the Chicago Morning News about the lead Landscape Architect for the Chicago Botanical Gardens. Her description of her role and the impact of Landscape Architecture resonated with me, and I realized that it perfectly combined my passions! As cheesy as it sounds, it was very much my “Aha!” moment, and I have never looked back.
Could you share a memorable moment or experience that solidified your passion for Landscape Architecture?
While I cannot pinpoint a singular moment, I am continually inspired by the work of individuals in the industry. In college, I had the privilege of speaking with distinguished Landscape Architects such as Mikyoung Kim, James Corner, and Aki Omi. Their dedication and innovative work have left a lasting impression on me.
Can you tell us about a (RVi) project or achievement that you’re particularly proud of in your career?
From contributing to large master planned communities to working on my first urban infill project, expanding my rendering and graphic techniques, and leading designs on various projects, I have cherished every opportunity for growth and learning. However, with these achievements, the experiences that hold a special place in my heart are the first few projects I had the privilege to lead designs on during my internship and first year of work. During my internship with what was then Waldrop Engineering, I had the opportunity to lead a sign design for an Indian Rocks Beach community. Receiving images of the installation of the sign while I was away at school as a senior in college was a surreal experience that made me realize the impact of my work in the “real world.”
Are there any specific professional goals or aspirations that you’re currently working toward?
My ultimate goal is to become a registered Landscape Architect, and I plan to begin taking the LARE this summer. On a day-to-day basis, I am focused on embracing new learning experiences and refining my expertise. I believe that learning from seasoned professionals like those I work with and collaborating with peers will greatly contribute to my professional development. I am in the early stages of my career and am always eager to absorb new ideas and techniques from those around me!
Have you faced any significant challenges in your professional journey, and how did you overcome them?
One of the most significant challenges in my professional journey has been balancing my work and chronic illnesses. The dynamic nature of my chronic illnesses adds a layer of uncertainty to my days, which can complicate my professional life at times. I am grateful for the accommodations and understanding that I have received from my coworkers and the management team; their willingness to lend a helping hand has made a world of difference. I am also grateful for the unwavering support of my family, who encourage me to navigate through life’s challenges with resilience and grace. Additionally, my service dog, Finley, has been an invaluable companion, providing me with the independence I need on difficult days.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career in Landscape Architecture?
I would emphasize the importance of being open to “the moments.” In this field, small moments can lead to significant opportunities and growth. Whether it’s a casual conversation with a colleague, a networking event, or sharing your passion with others, these moments can be pivotal in shaping your career. Embracing these moments can lead to new design techniques, collaborations, and unexpected opportunities. I believe that Landscape Architecture is an inclusive and inspiring field that welcomes all. Everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard, regardless of experience or skill level. Be open to expressing your ideas and seizing the moments that come your way!
